Understanding depression

Depression is a disease that has many forms. A big percent of people know that treating depression is so diverse. However, pharmacological medication is not the only option in the treatment of depression.

What is depression?

Depression is a mental illness, and the person who is suffering from it perceives the reality in black colours. There is no clear frontier between blues and depression. However, scientists distinguish many criteria what allows to identify this illness accurately. What distinguishes depression from blues? The most important issue is the length of persistence of conditions. Blues lasts just about a few hours. The depression symptoms can last longer than two weeks.

The ways of experiencing sadness and the situations that caused them are different, just as the reactions of people are different. Modern science, however, is not completely powerless and criteria have been set up for accurate diagnosis. You can talk about depression when sadness accompanies: lack of energy, lack of empathy, frequent tension and irritability, reduced efficiency of memory and intellect, problems with concentration, unwillingness to perform activities we liked doing so far, difficulties with falling asleep and insomnia, sense of guilt and bleakness and reduced appetite.

Is depression a disease?

The term „depression” functions in the colloquial sense as a term for malaise, depression, regardless of the reasons that caused such a state. In psychiatry, depression means a particular type of mood and emotion disorder. These special features are associated with the recognition of the severity of symptoms as a disease and the need for medical help. Firstly, the appropriate treatment of depression we must begin with the correct diagnosis. What do you think, who do you have to visit when you are depressed: psychiatrist or psychologist? Most people often get depression symptoms to the family doctor or neurologist. As I know from my experience, they often get sedative drugs and sleeping pills. However, it is worth knowing that if we use such pills regularly for more than five weeks, we can be addicted very easily. This is not a good way to treat depression.

Pharmacological treatment of depression

There are many different cases of depression. Recent survey says that only five percent of all cases require pharmacological treatment. If we notice any symptoms, which I have mentioned above, you should go to a psychiatrist. Together with him or her, you will decide if you can treat yourself at home or whether you need to be hospitalized. Psychiatrist should also prescribe you anti-depressant drugs. Appropriate pharmacology is suited to the form of depression that we suffer. It’s good to know that antidepressant drugs do not bring you immediate improvement. You need to take medicine about one-two months in order to feel better and notice some effects. Remember that you cannot leave them without your doctor permission.
When you feel sorrow, pain, anger, a sense of loss or you experienced mourning, the drugs unnecessarily suppress these feelings. It is much more sensible to get a support of a psychologist or members of your family. It is easier then to get out of a difficult situation without falling into depression.
Working on yourself and your emotions is so significant because it may help us to function normally. It also teaches how to notice the symptoms of relapse of disease. Thanks to that we are ready to go to the doctor in time. It is worth remembering that depression is a treatable disease. Although, according to the scientists, it can recur. This fact should not discourage patients from undertaking therapy, because the disease may cause another health problems, such as: cardiovascular diseases or cancer. In addition, it makes it difficult to treat other diseases, for example diabetes. To sum up, how to help people with depression? We can provide a real support by being with them. We can show our sympathy and compassion. We must help them in everyday activities and routines trying to understand their condition. What’s more, we should encourage them to take up the therapy and support them in this treatment.
